Get your debate on! This class you will not only analyze crucial issues facing our nation (and our world), but learn to THINK CRITICALLY about topics and situations...BEFORE making conclusions.

Here is a link for the ASSIGNMENT CALENDAR.

This blogspot will NOT be updated, unless otherwise you are told differently - and only when something is critical. It is only here for links to handouts provided in class, in case you may need a copy.

If you have been in Mr. Johnson's classes before, you know what CURRENTS are - simply a quick description of one major news event. In this class, CURRENTS are WEEKLY and will be used for MONDAY/TUESDAY IMPROM assignments.
YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN IMPROMs WITHOUT A CURRENT - so that's a double whammy! Two assignments for the price of one.
TURN THESE IN ON MONDAY!!!

For a DESCRIPTION and RUBRIC, click here.

MAKE SURE TO ALWAYS HAVE A COPY OF THE
U.S. CONSTITUTION IN MY CLASSES!!!

NOT OPTIONAL!!!

EACH MONTH there will be a debate that will be fought out.

Each month the topic will be provided - and you will not know until the day of the debate whether you are PRO or CON - so prepare for either position.

The RUBRIC for the MONTHLY DEBATES can be found here.Remember the DEBATE assignment is in three portions:

  • RESEARCH - debates demand research on the facts - at least 2 for a "C" (5 or more for an "A")
  • ESSAY - your essay should explain how you will approach your debate for either PRO or CON. The ESSAY RUBRIC is here.
  • DEBATE - I will be expecting LOGICAL SYLLOGISMS, PREPARATION and PRESENTATION SKILLS (poise, gestures, eye contact, clear/loud volume, preparedness...you know the drill...the same for weekly IMPROMs) - see the RUBRIC for the details.

AND REMEMBER we will be debating Ms. Mirich's class at the end of the year. By that time, you will be a mean, lean, fighting machine!...well, verbally speaking, that is...

MAY IS COMING...
REMEMBER to keep working on your May class/discussion.

Don't let this get away from you.
